Essential oils for the Menopause
The menopause aka the freedom years is a natural part of ageing that usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age, as a woman's oestrogen levels decline. In the UK, the average age for a woman to reach the menopause is 51.
Most women will experience menopausal symptoms. Some of these can be quite severe and have a significant impact on your everyday activities. Common symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, low mood or anxiety, reduced sex drive, depression and low mood states and problems with memory and concentration. These symptoms seem to be worsening for many potentially due to all the endocrine disruptors in our diet and environment.
Conventional treatment in the UK is with HRT but for many this prolongs the inevitable or produces unwanted side effects. Aromatherapy is a natural plant based solution that can offer relief from symptoms for many. Using essential oils that encourage oestrogen will not stop the menopause but will help regularise the body as it loses the natural oestrogen and progesterone so that the effects of the hormonal changes are buffered and the body is given help to adjust to the different levels.
When looking at choosing essential oils for the menopause we want to look for ones that contain the chemical components Anethole and Citral as they have been used to great effect.
Anethole is found in aniseed, fennel, star anise and is oestrogen-like, emmenagoguic (stimulates menstrual flow) and lactogenic; so it is used to regulate periods and help control hormone deficiency during the menopause.
Citral is found in many different oils and is characterised by its ‘lemon drop’ smell. It can be used during the menopause for balance of the mind and cycle. Citral is found in eucalyptus staigeriana, citronella, litsea, lemongrass, geranium and true melissa.
