Massage for muscle tension

There are different types of tension that you can suffer from including emotional and muscular and it can be presented in different ways for different people. Some people carry it in their neck or shoulders, others their lower back.

For some emotional tension can be a variety of symptoms such as anxiety, apprehension, distress, nervousness or uneasiness while the physical symptoms can come as stiffness, less mobility, tightness or headaches. Emotional tension can be caused by many factors within your home and work life, there may be past experiences that promote fearful or angry reactions or changes going on at home.

Muscle tension is defined as muscles of the body remaining semi-contracted for an extended period. It is typically caused by the physiological effects of stress and can lead to pain. Stress may change the body’s nervous system by constricting blood vessels and reducing blood flow to the soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and nerves in the back. This process causes a decrease in oxygen and a build-up of biochemical waste products in the muscles, resulting in muscle tension, spasm, and back pain.

Massage is a tool I use to help to relieve this muscle tension along with spasms, inflammation, fluid retention, aches, stiffness, and pain. Other benefits include improved circulation (blood and lymph), general flexibility, range of motion, and increased tissue elasticity. These are just the physical!

By using essential oils I can help address the emotional tension by promoting relaxation and using oils that reduce anxiety and depression, boost energy levels, speed up the healing process, boost cognition, induce sleep, strengthen the immune system and help reduce pain perception.
